The holidays are our favorite time of year here at MedCenter TMJ. Twinkling Christmas lights create magical displays, delicious hot chocolate is in abundance and there is a cheer all around that reminds us of every blessing in life. It’s a time to enjoy your family members and share memories that will last a lifetime.
Houstonians are fortunate in that we have so many Christmas events happening all over the city. Here’s our 2014 list of fun ways to make Christmas memories in Houston with family members of all ages.
Visit a Christmas Tree Farm
Instead of getting your Christmas tree from a big box store this year visit a Christmas tree farm instead. Many of the farms are family-owned businesses that incorporate fun activities that can be enjoyed before or after you cut down your own Christmas tree. Even if you’ve already gotten a tree many of these farms still have gift shops, rides and events throughout the holiday season. A few to consider include:
- Spring Creek Growers
- Old Time Christmas Tree Farm
- Double Creek Farm
- Red Caboose Christmas Tree Farm
- Dewberry Farm
Celebrate Christmas with the Houston Community
The Light Up the First Capitol event is the kickoff to the Christmas season in Houston. There will also be tons of activities for everyone including a parade, visits with Santa Claus, musical entertainment, train rides and the lighting of the town tree.
Dance the Night Away at The Nutcracker Ballet
For 16 years the Houston Repertoire Ballet has been delighting families and couples with their rendition of the Christmas classic The Nutcracker. The dancers tell the story of a young girl and her nutcracker doll as they take a magical holiday adventure. This year the Cypress Philharmonic will accompany the dancers with the original score from Tchaikovsky.
See Holiday Light Displays in a New Way at the Christmas Boat Lane Parade
Now in its 53rd year, the annual Christmas Boat Lane Parade at Kemah Boardwalk features hundreds of watercraft that are lit up by Christmas lights. While there you can also enjoy some shopping, dining and rides.
Tips for Starting New Christmas Family Traditions
The Christmas holiday is a perfect time to start family traditions that you’ll enjoy year after year. Here are a few tips for starting one of your own.
- Find activities that kids will enjoy as they grow and get older.
- Consider activities that you can do at home so that no matter where you live the holiday tradition goes with you.
- Make it something meaningful, like volunteering for a day or making at least one handcrafted gift for a family member.
- Find an activity that celebrates your family’s identity, such as your heritage, religion, geographic location or history.
